My Kingdom for a Horse

Daisy had breakfast waiting for us when we arrived in the kitchen this morning. Certainly get fed well in this country.  Everything is fresh and home-made.  We puttered around for a while until it was time to saddle up.

I was excited about riding, until Alberto pointed to his Wellies and then at my shoes.  Uh oh, that sounded like another mud hike to me.  It took us no time picking out our boots -- we are well practiced now and know our sizes.  The weather was overcast and cloudy.  We put on our warm gear and boots and met Alberto by the horses.

What a fabulous trail ride!  We made it over some pretty tough terrain and through some streams to the start of the hike. Yes, you have to hike to the waterfall.  Alberto is a great guide and just like Jose in the Valley of the Wax Palms, he made sure I got to the top in one piece.  The waterfall was quiet magnificent. Too bad the weather was so cold -- it would have been really neat to go swimming. Hung out for a while until it was time to go.

Retraced our steps back to the horses.  I felt much better on top of the horse than hiking. My knees are really taking a beating this trip.  Geoff did great on his horse. Managed to stay on the whole way! Rode back pretty much the way we came.  Back at the house, we couldn't wait to change into our suits and jump in the thermal pool. Aahh....It feels so good.  I also think that it is helping my cold somewhat.  When we got out it was time for lunch.

The other folks are gone, so we have been promoted to the small dining table from the kitchen.  We have the place all to ourselves now -- not sure if anyone else is coming today. Made a few calls after lunch. Called my brother and checked in on the Nor'easter they are having at home.  All is well. Next was the travel agent, Paula -- "No more hikes!" There was another waterfall hike scheduled that we cancelled and yet another coffee tour - we cancelled that as well.  There are just so many coffee farms you can see.  Paula also assured me that we will have a different car pick us up tomorrow morning.  We have to be on the horses by 7 am to meet the taxi.  Horses seem to be the only way in or out of this place. No traffic!!

It is very beautiful here. There aren't too many places with absolute quiet -- except of course for the cows, horses, and the birds. The place is surrounded by humming birds -- way too fast for me to get a picture.  The house is truly wonderful and the views are amazing:
La Quinta, is a traditional Hacienda Ganadera that extends to the foothills of Nevado del Ruiz, located in the Department of Caldas, Colombian coffee plantation. Given its excellent geographical location it has thermal water springs, natural waterfalls and spectacular landscapes....
This spectacular property has unique characteristics in terms of its source of thermal water, which is characterized by being the source of water with the highest temperature registered, 91 degrees Celsius and a pH of 7.4, it is neutral and highly medicinal.
In addition to this marvel, it has a spectacular view of the "Las Nereidas" waterfall, renowned for its imposing beauty.
Their hospitality has been very welcoming and everyone is quite patient with us and our smartphone translator.  Taking one last dip in the pool at around 3 pm.  I will miss that pool.

Next time... Traveling to the Tayrona Park

  1. Nothing like a leisurely horseback ride thru the countryside. All in all it appears you had a few days to rest up and get healthy for Bogota.
