Traveling to Tayrona

The horses were waiting for us at 6:45 am to take us up the trail to meet our ride.  It was a
beautiful morning with the sun just peaking through.  We rode past the hot springs. One thing we never did find out, was that the springs did not smell of sulfur.  Every hot spring we have ever been to smelled of rotten eggs -- these had no smell at all.  Anyway, Santiago, our new driver, with a substantial looking Land Rover, was waiting for us when we reached the gate.  What took over two hours the other day, took Santiago only an hour to get us back to civilization.  It was back to the gas station again to change vehicles for the rest of the drive to the airport. The ride was long but interesting traveling through the different towns. Finally we arrived at the airport.

Somehow I managed to get us some primo seats on both flights.  We are connecting through Bogota to get to Santa Marta.  The flights were uneventful -- most exciting part was changing terminals in Bogota.  It's sort of a helpless feeling not having a clue what folks are saying!!

Touching down in Santa Marta runway, it was a joy to see the ocean.  Incredible to think that we were just riding horses up in the mountains.  Henry, another driver, was waiting for us with a smile.  The drive to our new home was about an hour.  It is right outside Tayrona Park.  We have a room looking at the lagoon which leads to the ocean -- no swimming in the lagoon -- alligators!  Found out with a shock that there is no hot water here -- eco hotel and all that.

Just finished dinner, camp style, with a group of lovely young people from different parts of the world.  One gal actually lives in Jamaica Plain.  Lots of travel talk and what to do while we are here.  Tomorrow it is a trip to the park to see the beaches.  It will either be horses or hiking or both oh my!!

Next time.... Tayrona
