Trouble in Tayrona

First, let me start by saying nobody is hurt – only our house! Apparently, while we were
traveling on Saturday all kinds of folks were trying to reach us. We are pretty much out of touch here and the only wifi is up (and I do mean up) at the lodge. So this morning when we went to breakfast we brought the electronics and a flood of emails and voice messages came in saying that a lot of the shingles were off our roof due to the storm. I sent frantic messages to our contractor, hoping he wasn’t in Florida. Also emailed the insurance company. Of course being Sunday won’t hear from them till Monday.

Diane and Tim looked over the property and there were shingles strewn all over the beach and the yard. The guest room has some ceiling damage and part of the fence on the beach is gone. I called my brother and him and my nephew graciously drove down to help clean up the area. At this point, we are both pretty shook up.

Meanwhile, our guide shows up to take us through a beautiful tour of Tayrona Park. That will have to wait while we calm down and finish all our correspondence. I wasn’t keen on leaving the lodge and not being able to contact anybody. However, it would still be a while before Jerry & Andrew would get down to the house, we decided we might as well go – besides it was all paid for.

Hiking or horses?? We chose the horses. We’re old pros now. The trail through the forest was a bit challenging, especially with everyone else coming and going. It was about an hour out to Cabo Beach, which is supposed to be the place. There was a lot of activity but I was too busy trying to hook up my phone with someone’s hotspot. A very nice guy and a friend of Chris let me hop on to his connection. I was able to get through to Andrew on WhatsApp (a totally fabulous app). He filled me in on the details. The front shingles and even some on the shed were totally off – a small hole in the roof – ceiling damage in guest room and part of the beach fence missing. They didn’t go up to the attic but I assume there is water up there if it got down to the ceiling. The two of them picked up the shingles and made sure that the house was OK. Diane is also going back to check. While they were there, there ran into Al, the contractor – YEAH!!! He said he was going to
put a tarp over the whole. I will have to try and contact him and discuss how to fix everything. Also contact, Steve the fence guy. Bought the nice guy who shared his hotspot a cerveza

Feeling a lot better that the whole would be covered, we proceeded with our “good time”.  The sun was in and out. We climbed up to the overlook for some pictures. Met up with the  Brugges Belguim, that we met last night. We really didn’t feel like swimming. Back on the horses and through the forest we went. Stopped once to have a bite to eat. Ran into a couple from Amsterdam that we met at the coffee farm – small world. Then it was back to ranch, dropped off the horses and our driver was waiting. Never saw any monkeys as advertised.

Back at the hotel, we decided to go exploring. We leave here early tomorrow morning so this was our only chance. We found the trail to the beach. Very beautiful and very wild. The tide was coming in and you could feel the riptide. Hung out for a big and then headed back to our lagoon.

Almost time to clean up and head to the lodge where I’ll be able to make contact with the outside world again – sort of. Tomorrow is another packed morning of adventure and tubing plus we are moving accommodations to be inside Tayrona Park. I hope the wifi is better. This whole day has been sort of an out of body experience.

They’ll be a new group for dinner tonight. Last night when I got back to the table after posting the blog, there conversation turned to politics. It seems as soon as anyone gets an American audience off they go! It was wonderful listening to all these young people from different countries talk about Trump. The whole world is in a tizzy! We’ll see what tonight brings.

Up at the bar now for happy hour -- still dealing with storm damage.  Thank you one and all who have chipped in to help. It is great to have such wonderful family, friends, and neighbors. Hugs to you all -- dinner on us!!

By the way, the insurance agent did get in touch with me today.  Wonders never cease.

Cheers

Next time.. Tubing down the river

  1. The beach and the hacienda look beautiful. That horse trail looks interesting. There is one picture on a very narrow trail where two horses from opposite directions meet...how does one get around the other? Anyway, relax and enjoy, the house will be OK for the next couple of weeks.

By the way, I did check the attic, it looked OK from what I could tell. The water damage wasn't below the attic, it's above the right bed.
